A guys mind can be confusing when it comes to exes. The simple answer is, if you want him back; Change yourself, appeal to him, wait for the break-up, see if you are still on his mind.
Why did you break up? If it was petty? Like a fight over doing the dishes then less thought is needed. If it was something major like having him change his lifestyle then you need to forget about it. He broke up with you so you are the one who needs the change if you want him back. You cared for him before so having him change is like saying you want to date someone else.
Appealing should be easy. Go back to before you dated and simply act similar to that. When it comes to dating it was those actions that lured him in to begin with. If you said or did/do something controversial to that behavior then this is where YOUR change comes in. if you are willing to change for him then find a way to do so.
If what you say is true and the other woman is not right for him then eventually they will break up. Do NOT do anything to compromise that relationship otherwise his feelings for you will be full of hate.
